THE SLOW LOSS OF DISTINCTION

By: Bevan Bloemendaal—May 2026

There is a shift happening that doesn’t feel urgent, which is exactly why it's so easy to miss!

On the surface, everything looks like progress. We have more access to ideas than ever before, more tools to shape them, and more speed in how we bring them to life. The work looks structured, polished, and easier to produce, and by most measures this should be a creative and strategic advantage.

Zoom out and you start to see the pattern—sameness— and it’s hard to ignore.

Not identical and not copied, but familiar in a way that cannot be ignored. You read something and feel like you have read it before. You hear a strategy and can see where it is going early. You experience a brand and struggle to remember what makes it different.

Nothing is wrong, but is anything really standing out?

Where It Starts

We are increasingly beginning from the same place, using the same tools, accessing the same information, and relying on systems designed to organize and optimize what already exists.

Those systems can bring speed and ease, but they also work by recognizing patterns and moving toward what is most common, which means the more we rely on them, the more our thinking starts to look the same.

This is where the shift becomes harder to ignore!

We are not just scaling ideas, we are standardizing them, often without realizing it. We move faster, we arrive at answers more quickly, and the work feels resolved sooner, but more and more it begins to sit in the same range, shaped by the same inputs, leading to the same outcomes.

Nothing is technically wrong, but this is where distinction starts to slip.

Messy Middle

There has always been a part of the process that feels inefficient, the circling of an idea, the questioning, the moments where nothing quite lands and you have to stay with it longer than you would like.

That space is where actual ideas take shape. It is where something moves beyond the obvious and begins to form a point of view, yet it is also the part of the process we are increasingly skipping.

Now we move from question to answer almost instantly and arrive at something that works and move on, often before the work becomes interesting.

The messy middle is not a delay in the process, it is the process. Without it, ideas may come faster, but they rarely go further, and this is where the tension shows up.

The output still looks creative—it is structured, clear, and easy to understand, but it often feels resolved too quickly, as if it never had time to become something more distinct.

Over time, this creates sameness. Different teams, different brands, different voices, yet the outputs begin to feel similar, the language familiar, and the thinking aligned—not because of a lack of talent, but because we are no longer spending enough time in the part of the process where differences are formed.

We are not losing creativity, we are averaging it.

Humans Still Matter

As you have heard me say before, humans need humans to feel human, and that becomes more important in a world where so much of what we produce can be replicated and scaled.

I was recently reminded of a story titled “The Doorman Fallacy,” which speaks to how we reduce a role to its most visible function and, in doing so, miss where the real value lives. A doorman is replaced by an automatic door in the name of efficiency. The function is covered, the system works, but what disappears is everything else.

The awareness, the greeting, the presence, the judgment in real time, and the feeling that someone is there paying attention…that human layer. These are not easily measured, which is why they are often undervalued.

The same pattern is showing up in how we think about ideas. When we reduce work to output alone, we make it easier to replicate, but harder to create something that actually connects.

What gets lost is a point of view and with it, real connection.

So What’s the Answer?

If we are all starting from the same place and using the same tools, then the difference is no longer in what we have access to, but in how far we are willing to take it, and whether we are willing to stay in the work long enough to move beyond what is obvious and expected.

The risk is not that creativity disappears, but that we quietly accept what is good enough, what is resolved, what is predictable, and in doing so contribute to the very sameness we are starting to notice.

The messy middle, the part that feels inefficient and uncertain, is still where distinction is formed, and it still requires something human—judgment, perspective, and a willingness to push a little further than is comfortable.

We are not limited by the tools available to us, we are limited by where we choose to stop. If everything is beginning to feel the same, it is worth asking whether we are pushing far enough, or simply accepting it as done.

Make it feel MORE human, MORE honest, and MORE like you!
