HUMANS NEED HUMANS TO FEEL HUMAN

By: Bevan Bloemendaal—Jun. 2025

Stretched? Scattered? Overwhelmed? Missing joy? Real, right? And in our rush to optimize, automate, multitask (yeah, right), and do it all—we’re sadly skipping the invaluable human gestures that keep us grounded. A returned message. A simple thank-you. A listening ear.

These aren’t soft skills. They’re lifelines of humanity.

This isn’t a complaint. It’s not about being old-fashioned or resisting progress. It’s a reminder. A simple prompt. A call to consciousness—not a rant, not a reprimand—but a reflection on what it means to be human in a world that’s increasingly transactional, digitized, and disconnected.

It’s about the invisible glue that holds relationships, businesses, and communities together: human dignity, care, presence, and mutual respect.

The Subtle Slip Away

We are not less capable. But we are undeniably less connected. In our effort to be faster, smarter, and more efficient—we’ve started cutting corners on the very thing that makes us real to one another: consideration.

We’ve normalized non-responses, ghosting, and shallow gestures not because we don’t care—but because we’re overwhelmed. These micro-moments add up. And they quietly unravel trust, safety, and our capacity to feel seen. While we may not always be able to slow down, we do need to stay conscious of the choices that either build connection—or quietly erode it.

Professionalism isn’t just process—it’s presence. It’s easy to treat professionalism as a checklist. But real professionalism—the kind that builds lasting relationships and reputations—comes from presence. From acknowledging the effort behind the action, returning the call, even when it’s inconvenient, and offering clarity when silence might be easier.

These aren’t niceties. They’re signals that we respect the human across from us. That we’re still here, still listening, still choosing to show up for one another. The most trusted leaders aren’t defined by what they know—but by how they make others feel. That’s what stays with us.

What AI Can’t Touch

I say this with full appreciation for the tools that support us: AI can replicate information, automate workflows, and accelerate progress—but it cannot replicate emotional resonance. AI doesn’t remember how you made someone feel. It doesn’t interpret silence. It doesn’t elevate a moment with empathy.

What we offer as humans—thoughtfulness, compassion, nuance, presence—is not just irreplaceable. It’s needed. Especially now. Our humanity is not a liability. It’s our differentiator.

The True Human Connection

What makes us human isn’t just what we do—it’s how we do it. In a time of automation and distraction, human connection isn’t optional; it’s the thing that makes our work, our leadership, and our impact meaningful.

  • Presence still matters. Don’t underestimate the power of being fully there. Put the phone down. Make eye contact. Hold space for others to feel seen and heard. Disconnection often starts with distraction.
  • Responsiveness is respect. A thoughtful reply, even delayed, shows care. In a world of silence and ghosting, responsiveness builds trust, accountability, and real rapport.
  • Gratitude is a game-changer. Saying thank you isn’t performative—it’s connective. It recognizes effort, humanity, and the shared experience of doing hard things together.
  • Listening is leadership. We don’t need more voices—we need better ears. Listen not just to respond, but to understand. It’s one of the greatest gifts we can offer another human.
  • Grace goes further than we think. People are carrying invisible weight. Offering a bit more grace, a softer tone, or one more chance could be the thing that keeps someone going.

These aren’t grand gestures. They’re small, consistent acts that ripple outward. They create safety. They restore faith. They give people a reason to keep showing up.

The Ask Isn’t Grand—It’s Intentional

We’re not being called to be perfect. We’re being asked to be present. To recognize that decency, thoughtfulness, and kindness aren’t “extra.” They’re essential. They are how we feel safe, valued, and alive—in work and in life.

Because no matter how far we digitize, automate, and streamline…Humans still need humans to feel human.
